As the evenings draw in and the mornings turn crisp here in Prestwood, gardeners start to think about one thing – frost. A sudden cold snap can undo months of care in a single night, especially for tender and container-grown plants.
In our little corner of Buckinghamshire, the first frosts often arrive in late October or early November, though a clear night can catch you out earlier. Keep an eye on local forecasts, and when temperatures start dipping towards zero, it’s time to take action. Meantime, we’ve put together a few practical, local tips to help your garden make it safely through any chilly blasts.
Bring delicate plants indoors
If you’ve got tender plants like pelargoniums, fuchsias, or citrus, move them inside before frost hits. A bright porch, unheated conservatory, or even a windowsill will do the job. Make sure they still get light and reduce watering slightly, as growth naturally slows down in cooler months.
Wrap and insulate containers
For pots that are too large to move, protect the roots and containers themselves. Terracotta pots, in particular, can crack when the soil inside freezes. Wrap them in bubble wrap, hessian, or even old fleece. Group pots together against a sheltered wall — this helps them share a bit of warmth and shelter from icy winds.
Use fleece and cloches
For plants that must stay outside, horticultural fleece is your best friend. It’s light, breathable, and provides just enough insulation to fend off frost. Keep some ready to throw over vulnerable plants on clear nights. Cloches or mini-greenhouses also work brilliantly for herbs, bedding plants, or young shrubs that need a little extra care.
Mulch and water wisely
Add a layer of mulch around the base of perennials or shrubs to protect roots from temperature swings. A few centimetres of bark, compost, or leaf mould will do. And don’t forget to water before a frost – damp soil retains heat better than dry soil.
