Succulent plants are a fantastic choice because they’re low-maintenance, visually striking, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They love outdoors and can thrive indoors too, which makes them perfect for both beginners and seasoned plant enthusiasts! Here’s how to take care of them…
Most succulents need 4-6 hours of bright, indirect sunlight each day. Place them near a window where they can get plenty of light but not direct, scorching sunlight, which may cause sunburn. Some succulents like snake plants or haworthia can tolerate low light but may grow more slowly.
Hildreth’s Tip: If your succulent’s leaves are stretching or becoming leggy, it may be a sign that it isn’t getting enough light.
Watering
Succulents are drought-resistant, so they store water in their leaves and stems. Water them only when the soil is completely dry. This could be as little as once every 1-2 weeks in warmer months, and even less in winter. Soak, don’t Spritz. When you water, water deeply until water comes out of the drainage holes in the pot. Avoid misting succulents, as it can cause fungal growth. Overwatering is the leading cause of succulent death, as it can lead to root rot.
Hildreth’s Tip: Check soil moisture by sticking your finger about an inch into the soil. If it’s dry, it’s time to water.
Containers
Always plant succulents in containers with drainage holes to prevent water from pooling at the bottom, which could lead to root rot. Terracotta or clay pots are ideal because they wick away moisture, helping to keep the soil dry.
Repot Every 2-3 Years. Over time, succulents outgrow their pots or need fresh soil. The best time to repot succulents is in the growing season, usually in spring or summer, when the plant can adjust to the new soil more easily.
Hot or cold?
Succulents prefer temperatures between 60-80°F (16-27°C). Although they can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, they should be kept away from cold drafts or frost.
