How often is right?
The right bathing schedule depends on your dog’s breed, coat, and lifestyle:
- Short-haired breeds (like Beagles or Boxers): every 2–3 months is generally often enough.
- Long-haired breeds (like Collies or Spaniels): can sometimes need a bath every 4–6 weeks, along with regular brushing.
- Active outdoor adventurers: may need a wash more often, especially if mud and puddles are irresistible.
- Dogs with sensitive skin: should only be bathed when necessary to prevent irritation.
As a general rule of thumb: every 4–6 weeks suits most dogs, but always pay attention to their individual needs.
Tip: Between baths, pet wipes or a dry shampoo are perfect for quick freshen-ups.
What to look for in a dog shampoo
Not all shampoos are equal! Choosing the right one is just as important as how often you use it. Here’s what to look for:
- Dog-specific formulas – never use human shampoos, as they’re too harsh and dog skin has a different pH to ours.
- Natural, gentle ingredients – oatmeal, aloe vera, and chamomile are soothing favourites. Avoid harsh chemicals.
- pH-balanced products – designed for canine skin to avoid dryness and itching.
- Targeted solutions – hypoallergenic or veterinary-approved shampoos for dogs with skin sensitivities.
- Conditioning options – great for longer coats that tangle easily.
