Did you know that peace lilies aren’t always white? While the classic white Spathiphyllum is the most common, you can also grow red varieties that add a striking burst of colour to your indoor garden.
Although they’re a little harder to come by in garden centres across the UK, red peace lilies (often hybrids or specially cultivated varieties) do exist. These plants offer the same lush foliage and low-maintenance charm as their white counterparts, but with uniquely coloured blooms that range from deep burgundy to rich crimson tones. If you’re after something a bit different, a red peace lily can make a bold statement in any room. We’ve got some beauties in our garden centre right now!
How to take care of peace lilies
Peace lilies are popular for a reason – they’re easy to care for, forgiving, and thrive indoors, even in the UK’s dimmer months. Here’s how to keep yours happy:
Light – Peace lilies enjoy bright, indirect light. They’ll tolerate lower light conditions, but too little light can reduce flowering. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.
Watering – These plants prefer slightly moist soil, but they don’t like to be soggy. Water when the top inch of compost feels dry. Peace lilies are good at telling you when they need a drink – their leaves will droop slightly, but perk up quickly once watered.
Temperature & humidity – They like a warm environment, ideally between 18°C and 24°C. Keep them away from cold draughts and radiators. A bit of extra humidity can help – mist the leaves now and then, especially in winter when central heating dries the air.
Feeding – During spring and summer, feed with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser every few weeks to encourage flowering.
Potting – Peace lilies like to be slightly pot-bound, so don’t rush to repot them. If the roots start growing out the bottom or the plant dries out very quickly after watering, it might be time to size up. If you’re nervous, read our guide to repotting houseplants successfully.
