How to repair and reseed your lawn

After a long summer, lawns often show signs of wear. Bare patches, thinning grass, and yellow areas are common – especially if the weather has been hot and dry. September is the perfect time to give your lawn some care and attention.

After a glorious summer of garden barbecues, family play, and long evenings outdoors, your lawn may be looking a little worse for wear. It’s not unusual to see yellowing patches, thinning areas, or even bald spots after months of heavy use and hot, dry weather. Lawns, like any living plant, can become stressed when deprived of water and nutrients – and this summer’s dry spells may have left the ground compacted and the grass brittle.

The good news is that September is the ideal month to put things right. The soil is still warm from the summer, but cooler nights and more frequent rainfall create perfect conditions for grass seed to germinate. A little care now will reward you with healthy new growth before winter sets in, giving your lawn a strong foundation for the year ahead.

Repairing and reseeding your lawn in early autumn doesn’t have to be difficult – in fact, with just a few simple steps, you can bring even the most tired-looking lawn back to life. Here’s our practical guide to help you repair, revive, and reseed your lawn this September, even if the summer heat has left it dried out. And we’ve got all the kit you need at the Garden Centre!

Step 1: Assess the Damage

Walk across your lawn and take note of bare patches, compacted areas, and sections where weeds or moss have taken over. If the grass feels dry and brittle, don’t worry – autumn recovery is very achievable with the right approach.

Step 2: Prepare the ground

Preparation is key to successful reseeding.

  • Rake away debris – Remove dead grass, moss, and fallen leaves.
  • Scarify if needed – Use a lawn rake or scarifier to lift out thatch and open up the soil surface.
  • Aerate compacted soil – Dry summer weather can leave soil hard and compacted. Use a garden fork to make holes across the area, allowing air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots.

Step 3: Improve the soil

Grass seed germinates best in moist, nutrient-rich soil.

  • Add topsoil or compost to bare patches to create a fine seedbed.
  • Level uneven areas with a rake.
  • Mix in a lawn conditioner or fertiliser to encourage strong root growth.

Step 4: Reseed the lawn

Choose a high-quality lawn seed mix suited to your garden – whether you want a hard-wearing family lawn or a finer ornamental finish.

  • Scatter seed evenly over bare patches or across the whole lawn for overseeding.
  • Lightly rake the seed into the soil so it makes good contact.
  • Firm down gently with the back of a rake or by treading lightly to stop seed from blowing away.

Step 5: Water well

If the summer has left your lawn very dry, watering is essential.

  • Water lightly every day (unless it rains) until the seed germinates.
  • Avoid soaking the soil too heavily, which can wash seed away.
  • Once grass seedlings appear, reduce watering but keep the soil consistently moist.

Step 6: Ongoing care

  • Keep off newly seeded areas until the grass is strong enough to walk on.
  • Wait until the new grass reaches around 5–7cm tall before giving it a light mow.
  • Apply an autumn lawn feed to strengthen roots and improve winter hardiness.

Why September is the best time

  • Soil warmth helps seeds germinate quickly.
  • Cooler nights reduce stress on new grass.
  • Autumn rain means less watering is required compared to summer sowing.
