After weeks of sunshine and soaring temperatures, many UK lawns have gone from lush green to dry, straw-coloured and patchy. If your garden is looking more Mediterranean than English, don’t panic – your lawn is probably far healthier than it looks.
The recent heatwave has left many local gardeners asking us whether their grass is dead or simply dormant. In most cases, the answer is reassuring: your lawn is just taking a break!! With a little patience and the right care, most lawns bounce back remarkably well once the weather cools and the rain returns.
Why has my lawn turned brown?
Grass naturally enters a state called dormancy during prolonged hot, dry weather. It’s a clever survival mechanism that allows the plant to conserve water until conditions improve. So, although the grass blades turn brown, the roots are usually still alive and well beneath the surface.
Unless your lawn has been damaged by disease, heavy traffic or prolonged drought lasting many weeks, there’s a good chance it will recover naturally.
So, is my grass dead or dormant?
A quick test can help. Gently tug on a handful of grass.
- If it stays firmly rooted, it’s probably dormant and will recover.
- If it lifts away easily, those patches may have died and could need reseeding in autumn.
Should I water my lawn?
If rain is forecast, nature will usually do the job for you. But if this dry weather continues, a deep watering helps grass develop stronger roots that are better able to cope with future hot spells.
- Water deeply rather than little and often.
- Aim for one or two thorough soakings each week.
- Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation.
- Avoid frequent light watering, which encourages shallow roots.
Resist the urge to mow too short
One of the biggest mistakes after a heatwave is cutting the lawn too low.
Keep your mower blades set higher than usual until the lawn has recovered. Longer grass shades the soil, helping it retain moisture while protecting new growth.
Only mow when the grass has started growing again.
Should I feed my lawn?
Avoid applying high-nitrogen lawn feeds immediately after a heatwave.
When grass is stressed, forcing rapid new growth can do more harm than good.
Instead:
- Wait until temperatures have cooled.
- Apply a balanced late-summer or autumn lawn feed if needed.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
If some areas don’t recover naturally, early autumn is the perfect time to repair them. The combination of warm soil and increased rainfall makes autumn ideal for lawn renovation.
Follow these simple steps:
- Remove dead grass and rake the area.
- Loosen the soil surface.
- Sow fresh grass seed.
- Lightly cover with topsoil or lawn dressing.
- Keep the area consistently moist until the new grass establishes.
Help your lawn cope with future heatwaves

You can help by:
- Raising your mowing height during summer.
