If you want to prevent your Christmas tree from dropping needles, it’s all about choosing the right tree and taking care of it properly. Here are some tips to help keep your tree fresh throughout the festive season…
Buy a fresh tree
All our trees are freshly cut, to last as long as possible. The way to check for freshness is to run your hand along a few of the branches – if too many needles fall off, it’s likely your tree has been cut for a while. Look for a tree with a healthy, vibrant green colour and flexible branches.
Prepare your tree before bringing it indoors
Cut around 1-2 cm off the base of the trunk before placing it in water, as this helps the tree absorb water better by exposing fresh wood. Shake the tree to remove any loose needles before bringing it inside too.
Use a Water-Holding Tree Stand
You can keep your tree hydrated by placing it in a stand that holds water. Trees can drink up to 2-3 litres of water a day initially, so be sure to check and top up your water daily, ensuring the base of the trunk is always submerged.
Place your tree in the right spot
Avoid placing your tree near radiators, fireplaces, or heaters, as heat will dry it out faster. Equally, you want to keep it away from draughty windows and doors. The ideal temperature for your tree is 18-20°C (64-68°F). If you have underfloor heating, turn it down or off in the area where the tree is placed.
Try some anti-needle drop spray
Using a specialised anti-needle drop spray, which coats the tree to help lock in moisture, can help keep those needles on their branches!
Avoid Unnecessary Handling
Once your tree is set up, try not to handle or move it around too much, as this can cause needles to fall off.
