Discover why ladybird numbers are booming this summer and how these natural pest controllers help keep UK gardens healthy.
If you’ve noticed an explosion of ladybirds in your garden recently, you’re not imagining it. Across Buckinghamshire and much of the UK, gardeners have been spotting large numbers of these colourful little beetles on plants, fences, windows and even garden furniture.
The good news? Ladybirds are one of the best visitors your garden can have. While some garden visitors can spell trouble, ladybirds are definitely worth celebrating.
They’re beautiful, fascinating and incredibly useful, helping to keep common garden pests under control naturally. So if you’ve been spotting more ladybirds than usual around Bucks this year, consider it a compliment from nature – your garden is providing exactly the kind of environment these helpful insects love.
Why are there so many ladybirds this year?
Ladybird numbers naturally rise and fall from year to year, depending on weather conditions and food availability.
This spring’s warm temperatures, combined with plenty of sunshine and relatively dry conditions, have created ideal breeding conditions for both ladybirds and one of their favourite foods: aphids.
Aphids (often called greenfly or blackfly) thrive in warm weather and can quickly multiply on roses, fruit trees, vegetables and ornamental plants. Where there are lots of aphids, ladybirds won’t be far behind.
A single ladybird can eat dozens of aphids every day, while their larvae are even hungrier and can consume hundreds during their development. So if you’re seeing more ladybirds than usual, it’s often a sign that nature is doing exactly what it should.
Why ladybirds are every gardener’s friend
Ladybirds are among the most effective natural pest controllers in British gardens.
They help keep populations of the following under control without the need for chemical sprays.
- Aphids (greenfly and blackfly)
- Whitefly
- Scale insects
- Mites
This makes them particularly valuable in wildlife-friendly gardens, vegetable plots and around plants that are prone to aphid attacks, such as roses, broad beans and fruit bushes. By encouraging ladybirds, you’re basically allowing nature to do some of the hard work for you.
Not just the red ones
When people think of ladybirds, they usually picture the classic bright red beetle with black spots. However, the UK is home to more than 40 species of ladybird.
They can be:
- Red
- Orange
- Yellow
- Black
- Spotted
- Spotless
One species you may notice is the Harlequin ladybird, which arrived in the UK in the early 2000s and has become widespread. It comes in a variety of colours and patterns and is often mistaken for several different species.
How to encourage ladybirds into your garden
If you’d like these helpful insects to stick around, there are a few simple things you can do:
Grow pollinator-friendly plants
These flowers (among others) provide nectar and pollen that help support adult ladybirds.
- Lavender
- Cosmos
- Calendula
- Yarrow
- Marigolds
Avoid broad-spectrum pesticides
Many chemical sprays don’t distinguish between pests and beneficial insects. Reducing pesticide use helps protect ladybirds and other valuable garden wildlife.
Leave some wild areas
A small patch of longer grass, leaf litter or dense planting can provide shelter for ladybirds throughout the year.
Consider a bug hotel
Ladybirds need somewhere safe to overwinter. Insect hotels and natural habitats can provide valuable shelter during colder months.
Should you worry about large numbers of ladybirds?
In short, no. Although large groups of ladybirds can occasionally gather on walls or around windows, particularly in late summer and autumn, they are harmless to people, pets and plants.
In fact, their presence is usually a sign of a healthy garden ecosystem with plenty of biodiversity.
