Whether you’re planning a lazy Sunday lunch, meeting friends outdoors or looking for somewhere to let the kids run around, we’re lucky to have some fantastic picnic spots nearby. From peaceful woodland clearings and rolling Chiltern views to beautiful stretches of the River Thames, there’s no shortage of places to roll out a blanket and enjoy some fresh air.
At Hildreth’s Garden Centre we have all the kit, you choose the spot!
Ballinger & Lee Common
As far as picture perfect picnic locations are concerned, it’s hard to beat The Lee. Surrounded by rolling Chiltern hills, ancient woodland and wide open common land, it’s a wonderful place to spread out a blanket and enjoy the peace and quiet.
You can start at Balinger Cricket Club (where there’s a handy car park) then take a stroll through woods and fields to picturesque Lee Common. There are planty of places to pitstop on the way and once you reach your destination, you can stop at the charming Cock & Rabbit for a cold drink.

Hughenden Manor
One of Buckinghamshire’s finest National Trust properties, Hughenden combines sweeping parkland with spectacular views across the Chiltern Hills.
There are numerous spots to enjoy a picnic, whether you prefer open grassland or shady woodland beneath mature trees. Afterwards, explore Benjamin Disraeli’s former home, wander the gardens or follow one of the estate’s scenic walking trails. If the dog’s with, they might like paddle in the stream that runs through.

Higginson Park, Marlow
If riverside picnics are more your style, Higginson Park is one of the best locations in the area to have as your base camp. From here you can wander all the way up to Hurley…and beyond there if you have the energy and a comfy pair of walking boots!
Equally, you don’t have to plan a marathon. The park is slap bang alongside the River Thames, where you can watch boats drift past while relaxing beneath mature trees or on the wide open lawns. Afterwards, wander into Marlow’s bustling town centre for an ice cream, boutique shopping or a walk across the famous suspension bridge.

Hurley Riverside
Just a short drive from Great Missenden, Hurley offers one of the prettiest stretches of the Thames.
Bring a picnic and settle beside the river while watching narrowboats and paddleboarders glide by. The village itself is full of character, with lovely riverside walks, places to paddle and plenty of opportunities to simply slow down and enjoy nature. It’s particularly magical on warm summer evenings.

Shardeloes Lake, Amersham
A local favourite, Shardeloes offers one of the most tranquil picnic settings in the Chilterns.
The lakeside paths wind through ancient trees and open parkland, providing countless quiet spots to enjoy lunch. Keep an eye out for swans, ducks and other wildlife while taking in the beautiful scenery. It’s also one of the best places locally for a gentle afternoon walk if you’ve just enjoyed lunch in Old Amersham.

Coombe Hill
If you’re after breathtaking views, Coombe Hill is hard to beat. Sitting high above the Chilterns, it’s one of Buckinghamshire’s most spectacular viewpoints, with sweeping vistas across the Vale of Aylesbury that stretch for miles on a clear day.
There are plenty of grassy spots to lay out a picnic blanket, and it’s the perfect place to combine lunch with one of the area’s best walks. Don’t forget to visit the striking Coombe Hill Monument, built in memory of the Buckinghamshire men who lost their lives in the South African War. On sunny days you’ll often see families, walkers and dogs enjoying the open space, while the sunsets here are particularly special.

Hildreth’s to Little Kingshill
One of the prettiest walks is literally right on our doorstep. Turn left out of Hildreth’s and follow the path up to the Polecat Inn and head down the narrow foot path opposite. Bear right through the woods, cross over Peterley Lane and rejoin the footpath that takes round the edge of Peterley Manor Farm. Keep following the footpath, bearing right and you’ll circle round gorgeous open fields and another footpath that winds all the way to Kingshill, where you can stop for a refreshing pitstop at the Full Moon Pub.
