We’re delighted to share some exciting news that The George Hotel has officially opened, bringing a beautiful new boutique place to stay right in the heart of Great Missenden.
It’s been a labour of love for the Hildreth family (especially Dan) and now, newly opened, The George offers six luxury bedrooms, each thoughtfully designed to combine comfort, character and a touch of indulgence. Even better for local dog lovers, two of the rooms are dog-friendly, making it easier for friends and family visiting the area to stay close by – without leaving their four-legged companions at home.

The history of The George
It’s believed by historians that The George Inn itself was established in the late 15th century, providing lodging and refreshment for visitors to the nearby Great Missenden Abbey (which was originally established as an Augustinian Monastery in 1133 and remained one until Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries in 1538). This made the Inn – now a bustling pub – the village’s first such establishment.
Located on a busy route to the Midlands from London, Great Missenden had many coaching inns – there were 12 of them at one time on the High Street alone! The George was a popular one, though it faced decline when coaching stopped.
New openings like The George Hotel help keep a village vibrant and thriving and we’re proud to be part of a community that supports independent businesses and continues to attract visitors, while staying true to its village character. Look forward to welcoming you soon!
