Who fancies some ‘real’ bread?

Every February, the UK celebrates Real Bread Week—a time to honour the craft of genuine breadmaking and to shine a spotlight on the importance of the real, proper wholesome stuff!

Real Bread Week was founded by the Real Bread Campaign, an initiative launched in 2008 by Sustain, the alliance for better food and farming. The campaign was born out of a growing concern about the dominance of industrial bread production and the impact it was having on public health, local economies, and traditional baking skills.

Industrial bread, often loaded with artificial additives, preservatives, and enzymes, had become the norm in supermarkets. These products were far removed from the simple, natural loaves baked by artisans and home bakers for centuries. The Real Bread Campaign sought to challenge this status quo by promoting bread made with only the essential ingredients: flour, water, yeast, and salt.

So that’s the history bit over with.

Closer to home we try and support the art of traditional breadmaking year round. If you’re a regular to Hildreth’s, you’ll know that we stock delicious loaves, fresh from Chesham-based bakery, Darvells. If you didn’t know, we get fresh deliveries every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday with delicious bakes to choose from including:

Bacon and Stilton

Cheese and Marmite

Apple and Ginger

Tomato and Herb

Pear and Stilton

They’re all delicious but the Lardy Cake is particularly popular! So get here early to grab yours!!

Real Bread Week takes place from the 15th -23rd February.
