How often should you water your houseplants?

Caring for houseplants can be a rewarding experience, but one of the most common questions plant owners have is: how often should I water them? The answer isn’t one-size-fits-all; it depends on factors like plant type, season, humidity, and soil composition.

To help you determine the right watering schedule for your indoor plants, you need to understand your particular plant’s individual needs. Different plants have different water requirements. But here are some general guidelines:

Succulents & Cacti: These plants store water in their leaves and stems, so they need to be watered only every 2–3 weeks.

Tropical Plants (e.g., Monsteras, Philodendrons): These typically require watering once a week, but they thrive in humid environments.

Ferns & Calatheas: These plants love moisture and should be watered every few days to keep the soil slightly damp.

Houseplants generally need more water in the growing season (spring and summer) and less during dormancy (autumn and winter). During colder months, many plants slow their growth and require less frequent watering. Rather than sticking to a strict watering schedule, the best way to know if your plant needs water is to check the soil. Insert your finger about an inch into the soil – if it’s dry, it’s time to water, if it’s still moist, wait a few more days.

Choose the Right Watering Method

Bottom watering: Placing the plant in a shallow tray of water allows the roots to soak up moisture evenly.

Top watering: Pour water slowly until it drains from the bottom of the pot to prevent root rot.

Misting: Some plants, like ferns, benefit from occasional misting to maintain humidity.

Watch for signs of over or underwatering too. Classic signs you’re overwatering include yellowing leaves, soggy soil, mould growth, or root rot. Likewise if you’re noticing droopy or crispy leaves and / or dry soil pulling away from the pot’s edges, you’re likely underwatering.

At the end of the day, there’s no universal watering schedule for all houseplants, but by understanding your plant’s specific needs and adjusting based on environmental conditions, you can keep your indoor jungle happy and thriving. When in doubt, check the soil and observe your plant’s behaviour – it will tell you what it needs!
