The best time to plant roses

Whether you’re an experienced gardener or a beginner, knowing the best time to plant roses can make all the difference in ensuring healthy growth and abundant blooms.

We’ve got some gorgeous roses in stock all ready to find their forever home in your garden. So, when to plant them? Well, the best time for planting roses in the UK depends on whether you are planting bare-root or container-grown roses.

Bare-Root Roses (Autumn to Early Spring)

Bare-root roses are typically planted between late autumn and early spring (November to March), while they are in their dormant state. Planting roses during this time allows the roots to establish before the growing season begins. Ideally, choose a mild, frost-free day to plant, ensuring that the ground is not waterlogged or frozen.

Container-Grown Roses (Spring to Early Autumn)

Container-grown roses offer more flexibility and can be planted at any time of the year, provided the ground is not frozen or extremely dry. However, the best times for planting are spring (March to May) and early autumn (September to October), when the weather is cooler and moisture levels are more stable, reducing transplant shock.

Essential Tips for Planting Roses

Choose the Right Location

Roses thrive in sunny spots with at least six hours of sunlight per day. Avoid areas with excessive shade or where roses have been previously planted, as soil diseases may persist.

Prepare the Soil Well

Roses prefer well-draining, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Before planting, enrich the soil with well-rotted manure or compost to provide essential nutrients. If planting roses in clay soil, consider adding grit or sand to improve drainage.

Dig a Proper Planting Hole

For bare-root roses, dig a hole large enough to accommodate the roots without bending them. For container-grown roses, ensure the hole is twice the width of the pot. Position the rose so that the graft union (the swollen part above the roots) is just above soil level.

Water Thoroughly

After planting, water deeply to help the roots settle. Continue watering regularly, especially during dry spells, but avoid overwatering as roses dislike waterlogged soil.

Mulch and Feed for Healthy Growth

Apply a layer of mulch, such as compost or bark chips, around the base of the plant to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Feed roses with a specialist rose fertiliser in spring and summer to encourage vigorous growth and prolific flowering.

Prune for Strong Structure

Regular pruning encourages healthy growth and better flowering. In late winter or early spring, remove dead or weak stems and shape the plant for an open, airy structure.

Planting roses at the right time and following essential care tips will ensure that your garden is filled with vibrant blooms for years to come. Whether you’re planting in autumn, spring, or beyond, providing the right conditions will help your roses thrive.
