Mother’s Day in the UK dates back to the 16th century, when it was known as Mothering Sunday. Traditionally held on the fourth Sunday of Lent, it was a day when people would return to their ‘mother church’ – the main church or cathedral in their area.
Over time, this religious tradition evolved. Young people working away from home were given the day off to visit their families, and it naturally became a time to honour mothers and mother figures. Small gifts, flowers, and special cakes (like the traditional Simnel cake) became part of the celebration.
