How to grow gladioli

Gladioli are the fireworks of the summer garden – tall, elegant spikes bursting with colour that add drama to borders and make stunning cut flowers.

Often associated with classic cottage gardens or flamboyant floral displays, these plants are enjoying a modern revival thanks to their bold hues, architectural shape, and relatively easy care.

If you’ve never grown gladioli before, don’t be put off — they’re surprisingly simple, and with a few tips, you’ll have a garden full of spectacular blooms from mid-summer onwards.

Here’s how to grow gladioli successfully in the UK.

Why grow gladioli?

Gladioli (or “glads”) are members of the iris family and native to South Africa. Their name comes from the Latin gladius, meaning sword — a nod to their tall, pointed foliage. But it’s the flowers that steal the show: densely packed, trumpet-shaped blooms in almost every colour imaginable, from pure white to deep burgundy, candy pink, sunset orange, and even multi-coloured varieties.

They’re perfect for:

  • Cutting gardens
  • Adding vertical interest to beds and borders
  • Filling gaps in late summer displays
  • Creating statement pots on patios

When to plant gladioli in the UK

Gladioli grow from corms, which look like small, round bulbs. These are planted in spring, from March to May, once the risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up a little.

To extend the flowering season, plant a few corms every couple of weeks until early summer — this gives you a succession of blooms through July, August, and into September.

Where to plant them

Gladioli love sun and free-draining soil. They’ll thrive in a warm, sheltered spot with at least 6 hours of sunlight a day. If your garden has heavy clay soil, plant them in raised beds or pots with added grit to improve drainage.

Planting tips:

  • Depth: 10–15cm deep
  • Spacing: 10–15cm apart
  • Staking: Tall varieties may need support — insert canes at planting time to avoid disturbing roots later

Caring for gladioli

Gladioli are fairly low-maintenance once they’re in the ground, but a few simple steps will help them flourish.

Watering:

  • Water well after planting.
  • Keep soil moist during dry spells, especially once flower spikes appear.

Feeding:

  • Apply a balanced liquid feed every couple of weeks once foliage is established.
  • Stop feeding once flowers fade, but allow the leaves to die back naturally so the corm stores energy for next year.

Supporting:

  • Use individual stakes or stretch twine between rows if growing en masse.
  • Keep an eye on strong winds, especially for taller varieties.

Growing in pots

Yes, you can grow gladioli in containers! Choose dwarf or medium-sized varieties for best results. Use a deep pot with drainage holes, fill with peat-free compost mixed with grit, and follow the same planting depth and spacing as for borders.

After flowering – what next?

Once your gladioli have finished blooming:

  • Cut off the spent flower spike, but leave the foliage.
  • Allow leaves to yellow and die down naturally.
  • In milder parts of the UK, corms can be left in the ground over winter if the soil is well-drained and mulched.
  • In colder areas or heavy soils, lift the corms in autumn, dry them off, and store in a cool, frost-free place ready to replant next spring.

Common problems

Gladioli are generally trouble-free, but watch out for:

  • Thrips (tiny sap-sucking insects) – they can cause silvery streaks or distorted blooms. Try a garlic spray or insecticidal soap.
  • Rot – avoid waterlogged soil and always plant in well-drained conditions.
  • Wind damage – stake taller types to prevent snapping in strong gusts.
