How to make daffodils last longer

Daffodils are one of the most cheerful and uplifting flowers to have in your home. If you’ve bought a bunch of daffodils from Hildreth’s, there are several steps you can take to help them last longer.

The first step to ensuring your daffodils last longer is selecting the freshest flowers possible. Look for daffodils with tight buds or those just beginning to open. The more open they are when you buy them, the shorter their vase life will be. We make sure all the daffodils we sell are as fresh as they can be.

As soon as you get home, trim the stems of your daffodils by about 1-2 inches. Use sharp scissors or a knife to make a clean cut. Always cut the stems at a 45-degree angle, which increases the surface area for water absorption. Cutting them underwater is also a great option to avoid air bubbles, which can clog the stem and prevent water uptake.

Daffodils tend to have long, green leaves that can drag into the water. Remove any excess foliage that will be submerged in the vase to prevent rotting. This keeps the water fresh and prevents bacteria from building up, which can shorten the lifespan of your flowers. You can also create your own flower preservative by mixing a tablespoon of sugar and a teaspoon of bleach into the vase water. The sugar helps nourish the flowers, while the bleach keeps the water clean and free from bacteria. Change the water every two days to maintain freshness.

Daffodils are sensitive to heat and sunlight, which can cause them to wilt more quickly. Place your vase in a cool room away from radiators, direct sunlight, or drafts. A stable temperature will help them stay fresh for longer. If after a few days, you may notice the flowers starting to droop, try giving them a ‘fresh start.’ Trim the stems again, change the water, and place them in a cooler spot. Sometimes, this little rejuvenation is all they need to perk up!

Once daffodils are cut, they will continue to open up and bloom in the vase. To prolong their bloom time, avoid jarring them too much. Keep them in a stable environment, and they will last for a week or even longer, depending on the variety and freshness when you bought them.

And finally…handle your daffodils gently! Their stems are relatively soft, and if they’re bent or damaged, they’ll not only look less attractive but may also degrade faster. Keep them upright in the vase and avoid any unnecessary movement.
