Hellebores are an excellent choice for adding winter and early spring colour to UK gardens. These hardy perennials are easy to grow and thrive in the UK climate. Here’s a guide to help you grow them successfully:
Choose the right spot
Hellebores prefer partial to dappled shade, making them ideal for woodland gardens or under deciduous trees and shrubs. Plant them in a sheltered location to protect their delicate flowers from strong winds and be aware that they thrive in well-drained, fertile soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Heavy clay soils can be improved with organic matter and grit to aid drainage.
Planting Hellebores
You can plant Hellebores in winter as long as the ground isn’t frozen. But ideally the best time to plant is in autumn or early spring, allowing about 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) between plants to give them room to grow. Plant them so the crown is just below the soil surface.
Caring for Hellebores
Apply a layer of organic mulch (like compost or leaf mould) around the plants in autumn to enrich the soil and retain moisture. Make sure you water regularly during dry spells in their first year to establish roots, but avoid waterlogging. Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser in early spring to support flowering and growth and remove spent flowers to encourage new blooms and prevent self-seeding if you don’t want them spreading.
Pruning and maintenance
In late autumn or early winter, cut back old and damaged leaves to allow the flowers to shine and reduce the risk of fungal diseases. Every 3–5 years, you’ll want to divide established clumps in early spring after flowering to keep your plants thriving.

Plant hellebores alongside other winter-flowering plants like snowdrops, cyclamen, and evergreen ferns to create a vibrant winter garden. With the right care, they’ll bring reliable winter and early spring colour to your garden, year after year.
