How to take care of indoor orchids

Did you get one of our gorgeous indoor orchids for Christmas? Taking care of them involves a bit of understanding around its specific needs for light, water, humidity, temperature, and feeding. Here are our top tips…
Light, potting and pruning

Place the orchid near a bright window with indirect sunlight. East or west-facing windows are ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves. During the darker winter months, consider using a grow light to provide sufficient light.

Use an orchid-specific bark mix for good drainage and air circulation around the roots. Repot every 1-2 years, preferably in spring. After flowering, cut the flower spike above a visible node (if healthy) to encourage a secondary bloom. If the spike turns brown, cut it at the base.

Watering and feeding

Water once a week during the growing season and less in winter. The roots should not sit in water, always use water that’s lukewarm and water the plant early in the day. Allow water to drain completely. A simple way to check moisture levels is to stick a finger about an inch into the potting medium; if it feels dry, it’s time to water!

Use a balanced orchid fertilizer (e.g., 20-20-20) diluted to half strength and feed every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) and less frequently in autumn and winter.

Humidity

Place your pot on a tray filled with pebbles and water, ensuring the pot itself doesn’t sit in the water. Use a room humidifier if necessary. Misting occasionally can be helpful, but avoid water pooling on the leaves.

Temperature

Keep orchids in a stable environment – 18-24°C (65-75°F). Always avoid placing them near cold drafts, heaters, or air-conditioning vents.
