Gardening trends come and go, but there are certain plants that never lose their charm. One of our absolute favourites? Heuchera. These stunning perennials are so much more than just foliage – they’re the colourful backbone of borders, containers, and shady corners all year round.
Heuchera are great! Why? Because few plants offer such an extraordinary palette of colour in their leaves alone. From rich plums and velvety purples to bright lime greens, burnished ambers, and even metallic silvers, there is a variety to suit every planting scheme. This means they can be used as bold focal points or as subtle companions, weaving colour and texture through a border in a way that feels really effortless.
While many plants burst briefly into glory before retreating into dormancy, a heuchera provides interest almost all year round. Even through winter, when gardens can feel bare and quiet, their semi-evergreen foliage holds strong, bringing brightness to borders and containers on even the dullest days. They are also remarkably versatile.
Ideal for shady corners
Heucheras can be tucked into shady corners where other plants struggle, used to soften the edges of paths, or planted en masse for a dramatic sweep of colour. In containers, they really come into their own, spilling beautifully over the sides and pairing well with everything from spring bulbs to summer bedding. And the best part? They are also really easy to care for. With just a little attention to soil and watering, they reward gardeners with years of reliable colour, making them as suitable for beginners as they are for seasoned enthusiasts.
And then, of course, there are the flowers. While the foliage is the main event, the delicate sprays of tiny blooms that rise above the leaves in late spring and summer are so pretty. The airy flower spikes also provide a welcome food source for bees and other pollinators. It’s a gentle reminder that beauty in the garden can be both ornamental and beneficial.
